What would you do?

OK, I have a dilemma.

I may have mentioned, though I don't recall - I was written up at work for missing too many days. Even though I had valid reasons and/or paperwork, but I understood. That same day, another person in my department was also written up for the same thing. We were both told that any additional occurrences in the next 30 would result in 'further disciplinary actions'.

OK. No problem.

So, at the end of that week, this person told me (and several other people) that they planned to go out of town on vacation the following week (Memorial Day), and they didn't really care if they lost their job or not. The Friday before Memorial Day rolls around, and this person conveniently became ill, and was out the entire next week.

Now, I know for a fact that this person did indeed proceed with their plans to go out of town. (Gosh, how did you get so tan while you were home sick?) They basically told on themself and confirmed what I suspected.

Meanwhile, I'm calling my boss in tears because I was afraid I would be 5 minutes late one day last week!

I don't like being a snitch, but it's not fair* that this person got away with such a thing, and I know I would probably be fired if I were to pull such a stunt! My absences were legitimate, and this person gets to go on vacation without being penalized.

Boo.

I'm sure our boss doesn't know, and it really makes me angry that he's being played.

So, what would you do? Would you tell your boss, or would you just keep your mouth shut?

(*And yes, I know, "life isn't fair".)

Let's say you go to your boss and rat out your coworker. They're going to tell you that personnel issues are private, and they can't discuss that other person's behavior and/or any disciplinary action taken.

If the idiot was stupid enough to tell people he was going out of town, then called in sick for the entire week, your boss knows (unless the boss is a complete moron).

Another aspect to keep in mind is that most companies that I've worked for had a standard policy that if you call in sick 3 days in a row (or more), you need a doctor's note in order to return to work. You might check your employee handbook about that, and if it does, and you know for a fact that they didn't get one, you could then go to your boss out of concern for your own health. Since the other person missed 4 days of work, you think it would be safer for everyone if they saw a doctor.

At this point it's probably too late for any action, but it might be worth a shot.

Any time there's performance or disciplinary issues with another coworker, be very careful about bringing them up with management. While I understand you want to be treated fairly, and that means everyone being held accountable to the same rules, you don't want to get a reputation as a tattle-tale.

You pretty much summed up what I thought. There is a 'doctor note' policy - and there was a note produced, although the source is/was questionable.

And you're right, my boss probably knows. He and I have had some pretty frank conversations about issues similar to this, and I think he values my feedback. But this issue is bigger than what we've discussed in the past.

Maybe what's really pissing me off is how obvious this person is making it. Aside from the tan, there are photos on display! lol. There's no need to flaunt the fact that you got away with it. And by management not taking the required action as per policy, it sends a message to the rest of the staff that we, too, need not take our jobs seriously.

Blah.

Thanks for your feedback! We need to have that drink.

LOL! Don't have to, they're hanging at said person's desk! Right next to the bottle of decongestant - with all the writing in Spanish.

i had a boss that used to arrive half an hour late every morning and leave half an hour early... I covered for him initially as I was a good worker and felt like I was helpnig him out...
after 8 months of this I decided I would no longer cover for him.
He didn't get penalised but lost a bit of respect... i know he doens't work there any more

Personally, I would let it go this once, but if they do it again, maybe drop hints loudly/accidently ;)

I did let it go, but it really pisses me off that I'm held to a different standard than everyone else. Maybe I'm just that valuable? I don't know. But that same week, the girl who screws things up every single day, without fail, was voted "employee of the month". WTF?

So if I'm reading all of this correctly, to be a good employee at this company, I should lie about being sick and take a vacation, screw up things on a daily basis, and be a complete tool. I don't think I can pull that off. :)

Just for an FYI for all that is concerned, as one knows some like you leave our a few details, A vacation time was requested the trip was paid for non refundable and yes the request for the vacation was denied and this said co-worker made a decision to take a chance and go on the trip. (Why was the vacation denied? Well, two reasons more or less. 1. No vacation time accrued and 2. Upper management was concerned about being short handed like you no who not showing up) But it did end up that this co-worker ended up going to the hospital the night before SHE left for the trip but again the trip was paid for and the chance to go to Cancun for a week all exclusive sounded like a good place to get the rest she needed. Even there SHE still had to go to a doctor and get more meds and called in every morning to her boss on returning had to go back to her doctor because SHE was still sick at no time did she ever deny where she was. So in closing those are a few of the facts that one did not bother to mention. Draw your own conclusion on who’s looking for sympathy. Or just looking for an excuse for her own actions.?..? Tom aka The guy she went with.

P.S.
If one would actually work instead of writting blogs at work she might be concidered a more valuble employee.
